Texas Electricity Market

January 21, 2011

Last week, the Public Utility Commission (PUC) of Texas submitted their annual report to the Texas Legislature which updates the status of the electric markets in Texas.  Overall, competitive electricity prices have dropped over the past two years.  The PUC found three major factors affecting prices:  1)  lower natural gas prices; 2)  more wind generation; and 3)  increased competition in the electricity market.  The PUC report also noted that residential customers have more offers and more retailers available to them.  In addition, there have been some infrastructure and market improvements designed to increase customers’ satisfaction within the state of Texas.  One of these is the advanced metering deployment.  Over 2.5 million smart meters have already been upgraded, and all 6.1 million should be completed by 2015.  Customers will soon see retail electric providers (REPs) beginning to offer products that take advantage of the data that smart-meters provide, such as prepaid services that permit customers to avoid paying a deposit and allow customers to pay for electricity in smaller increments.  In the next few years, Texas customers can expect REPs to provide additional technologies that will allow customers to manage their consumption better by using the information from their smart meters.

As this report shows, it pays to shop and compare your residential and business electricity rates.  Please visit our website at www.ReduceYourPowerCost.com to see how your current rate and electricity provider stack up against the competition.

Lower Natural Gas Prices = Lower Electric Prices?

September 2, 2010

Texas has seen record high temperatures this summer which would normally mean higher electric bills for consumers.  However, natural gas prices have fallen more than 60 percent since July 2008, and since natural gas prices drive the wholesale price of electricity in Texas, this should result in lower electric bills for customers who used a similar amount of electricity last summer to this summer.  That is good news for consumers who have seen additional fees added to their bills in recent months.  For example, in the Houston area, CenterPoint has been collecting about $3 a month from customers to help pay the cost of installing smart meters.

The biggest component of your bill, though, is how much electricity you actually use.  The best way to realize a savings is by cutting your usage through conservation, energy-efficient appliances and windows, and turning off appliances when not in use.
